CONDITION ON RECEIPT: Five volumes were housed together in a cloth-covered portfolio. The portfolio was water damaged and cockled and not original to the contents. The volumes were bound in Asian-style bindings with paper covers. Printed title labels were adhered to the front cover of each. Purple kadogire were intact at the head and tail of the spines of each text block. Text blocks were side-sewn with green silk thread. The text blocks consisted of printed folios with folds at the fore edge. An interior sheet of paper was included within each folio, presumably to provide opacity to make pages more readable. The pages were in relatively sound condition, although some were cockled and water stained. The fore edges of several folios in Volume 1 were misshapen. As a result of water damage, some covers and pages were stained pink from soluble colored title labels and a pink endleaf. The sewing was weak in three of the volumes and broken in two. Call number information and an ownership stamp appeared on the verso of each title page. A note written in pencil on the verso of each title page read "De-acid 2004", however there was no information available describing the process or materials used.  A printed paper covering wrapped the five volumes together when they were issued. The wrapper was lined with paper on the interior and was dirty and stained and torn in places. Edges were tattered along the fold where the wrapper was opened.

TREATMENT PERFORMED: Written and photographic documentation was provided.  The sewing and kadogire were removed. Temporary sewing was put in place for the purposes of digitizing. Folds were locally humidified and flattened where necessary in Volume I. The kadogire were lined with Japanese tissue and reattached with wheat starch paste. The volumes were side-sewn with green silk thread. The printed wrapper was washed to reduce staining, mended with Japanese tissue and wheat starch paste and was placed around the volumes. A sheet of handmade paper was placed around the original wrapper and volumes. The volumes were housed in a custom phase box.
